Sustainable Energy for All
Mission
Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is an International Organization working with leaders in government, the private sector and civil society to drive further, faster action toward achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7, which calls for universal access to sustainable energy by 2030, and the Paris Climate Agreement, which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit climate warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched SEforALL in September 2011 as a global initiative that would mobilize action by these diverse actors in support of SDG7’s three core objectives:
- ensuring universal access to modern energy services
- doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
- doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
Operating under the leadership of its first CEO and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, Kandeh Yumkella, SEforALL brought multiple stakeholders together—governments, development banks, the private sector, investors, civil society, and international institutions—under a single umbrella.
Rachel Kyte took office as SEforALL’s CEO and Special Representative of the Secretary-General in January 2016.
Overall guidance for the global team is provided by the SEforALL Administrative Board
Accomplishments
- Many partnerships have also been formed – Regional and Thematic Hubs, and the Accelerator Platform.
- More than 100 countries have engaged with SEforALL, providing financial or in-kind contributions or working on tailored national strategies and investment plans to deliver on SEforALL’s objectives.
- Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and its partners launched a new research project at the 72nd UN General Assembly in 2017 that tracks and analyses for the first time finance flows for two key areas of energy access -- electrification and clean cooking -- in 20 high-impact countries in Africa and Asia that account for nearly 80% of those living without access to modern energy globally
